Robot Wins Half-Marathon, Breaking Human World Record

If you were thinking you could survive a robot uprising by being able to run faster than the robots, think again. A humanoid robot designed by the Chinese consumer electronics compnay Honor just did something that would have sounded like science fiction not long ago. It won a half marathon.

The race called the Beijing E-Town Half Marathon and Humanoid Robot Half Marathon took place at Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, China. In the half-marathon, humanoid robots ran alongside thousands of human participants. While this might not seem like a fair competition, kind of like a car racing a human, humans actually won last year with most robots not even finishing the race.

This time, a robot dominated the race. Honor’s robot completed the 21-kilometer course in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, beating the human world record and crossing the finish line first.

What stands out isn’t just the win, it’s how normal it’s starting to look. The winning robot ran with a steady, efficient gait, showing none of the awkward instability that defined earlier competitions.

Despite the breakthrough performance, the event also underscored that the technology is still maturing. Some competing robots stumbled early, veered off course, or required human intervention to continue. Even so, the overall improvement compared to previous years was clear.

The race is part of a broader push in China to accelerate real-world deployment of humanoid robots, testing their capabilities in dynamic and unpredictable environments. Events like this are designed not just as demonstrations, but as proving grounds for machines that could eventually operate in logistics, manufacturing, and emergency response.
