Elon Musk Says AI/Robotics Will Mean Everyone Can Have A Penthouse

In a new post on X, Elon Musk recently suggested that advances in artificial intelligence and robotics could lead to a dramatic expansion in global productivity, reshaping everyday life and access to housing and goods.

In his comments, Elon Musk argued that AI and robotics could increase the output of goods and services by several orders of magnitude, potentially creating a world where luxury living spaces such as penthouses become widely accessible if people choose them. He described a future defined by abundance rather than scarcity, where material constraints are significantly reduced.

Musk pointed to the science fiction vision of The Culture series as one of the closest fictional representations of this kind of post-scarcity society, where advanced artificial intelligence manages most production and humans live with far fewer economic limitations.

His comments align with earlier remarks made during Tesla’s “We, Robot” event, where he showcased the company’s humanoid robot program, Tesla Optimus. At the event, Musk suggested that robots like Optimus could eventually handle a wide range of everyday tasks, from household chores to caregiving, dramatically reducing the cost of labor and increasing overall economic output.

During the presentation, Musk described Optimus as part of a broader shift toward a world where humanoid robots are widely deployed and affordable, estimating long-term pricing in the range of a few tens of thousands of dollars. He framed the technology as foundational to a future economy where physical work is increasingly automated and human effort is redirected toward choice-driven activities.

Musk also posed a broader question about direction and values, asking what kind of future society actually wants. He suggested that “amazing abundance” would be the most desirable outcome if AI and robotics continue to scale as projected.
