A new chapter in home automation is unfolding in Shenzhen, where X Square Robot has introduced what it calls China’s first consumer-facing home-cleaning robot service. The rollout, announced April 2, marks a significant step in moving advanced robotics out of research labs and into real households.
The service is being launched in partnership with 58.com, one of China’s largest platforms for home services. Through the app, users can now book a cleaning session that pairs a human worker with an AI-powered robot, blending human judgment with machine efficiency.
In practice, the system works as a coordinated team. Human cleaners focus on nuanced, decision-based tasks, while the robot handles repetitive and structured chores such as wiping surfaces, organizing items, and collecting debris. The hybrid approach is designed to boost productivity while maintaining quality, a model that could accelerate adoption of robotics in domestic settings.
At the heart of the system is X Square Robot’s embodied AI foundation model, which integrates perception, planning, and action into a single framework. Unlike traditional robots that depend on rigid programming or remote control, these machines are built to understand tasks, break them down into steps, and adapt in real time to the unpredictability of home environments.
Company founder and CEO Wang Qian said the goal is to make artificial intelligence practical for everyday use, emphasizing utility over novelty. The Shenzhen deployment serves as both a commercial launch and a large-scale testing ground, allowing the company to refine its systems through continuous real-world use.
The partnership with 58.com is particularly significant given the platform’s reach across more than 200 cities and tens of millions of households. That scale provides a steady stream of data and feedback, helping improve reliability and push the technology closer to full autonomy.
The approach has also drawn attention from the robotics community. Chris Paxton, a researcher in embodied AI, noted that combining human labor with partially autonomous robots offers a practical path toward higher levels of autonomy over time.
As global competition in artificial intelligence intensifies, embodied AI is increasingly seen as the next major frontier. By deploying robots directly into homes at scale, X Square Robot is helping redefine how intelligent machines move beyond screens and into the physical world, reshaping not only how homes are cleaned but how people interact with AI in daily life.
